“A full and complete life, determined by the vision and values one has rather than what is imposed by institutions and, by fiat, the conscience of placid citizens.”

“Surely they would kill such a person or render him or her null and void in some way.”

“No, they would ignore him and make him take on the burden of explaining everything. It’s a kind of secular Hell.”

“But such a life would only be possible if the person kept records and knew the few significant arcs that slithered from point A to point B, sometimes across decades.”

“Yes, and he or she would have to be prepared to re-enter territory thought lost or abandoned out of good sense, something the institutions would never permit.”

“And vision would win over particulars. And particulars would be duties carried out methodically while the person went up various learning curves.”

“Perhaps but then time makes fools of even supposed wise human beings. Perhaps it’s just a roll of the dice that rolls wrong one era, rolls right another.”

“It takes resource and faith. By ourselves we are animals foraging the next meal, alert to the next attack.”

“But can you articulate this resource and this faith? Once it’s in the open air it can be shaped a number of ways. What is the true way? How do the lines of communication become so efficient that no loss occurs in meaning from one to another one?
