“Ah, many streams experienced and perceived and finally made sensible by one!”

“If the sublime re-entered the democratic soul it would be so much better. It is used now only to sell and convince people of the worst things imaginable. If the salesman transformed into the philosopher or poet. Hmm. Well, thought gabbles on because we are fixed in something without a doubt. We know each generation will grow among machines and gadgets and various forms of expectation and it will determine most of what we call life. There are limits.

“Democracy had a sublime, as you put it, soul when it believed in itself. It doesn’t believe in itself because there is no trust at any level of society, no one is satisfied with anything, and the media has amplified natural worry in the quisitive brain. Free women have some of the sublimity but then it’s bought off pretty quickly.”

“The competitive spirit has given way to the sameness spirit and god help those who stray outside the boundary of sameness. They will find a classification for you and that will be that.”

“It will revive when all the free attributes have been played out, on display, out in the open beyond what you see now because democracy has no confidence in itself and merely wishes to do more than what was done in the past.”
