First impressions: Pure destruction, terror, a kind of physical blight as the mushroom cloud ascends to the butt of clouds. The acceleration of history, running to overcome what? Old ways are well-known and end in disaster, are inexorable and learned on the bones and blood of millions. The world goes through a continual process of growth, expansion, re-organization, crisis, breakdown, growth, expansions, re-organization, etc etc.

The menace imposes its own will on the feeble attempts to adjust to it. What possible new relations can occur? What shaping influence in the affairs of th world can be the sluicewheel that shuts down the inevitable flood of fire?

Changes comes through the voice, the brain, and the act. the voice to keep "in the ear" of those who would destroy life. The brain to envision futures and to make hard, pragmatic choices that lead to these future. The act to demonstrate the ferocity and integrity of the citizen in his relation to his or her life. And what would destroy this? Intimidation; pandering to ideologues. The overwhelming fact of the machinery in front of one; physical machinery as well as economic and political machinery.

To have the same relations and expect that they suffice is not enough. To think that the same relations that unleashed two world wars will stop modern nuclear war is absurd.
