To listen to a general speak you'd think that the world was already at war. For all his talk about realistic this and realistic that the one relation that he speaks about is the blind lust that hides under the realistic. He is really armed with figures of speech and statistics.

Sincerity is not enough. A sincere desire is often the prelude to conflict. The question is this: "What will men and women in power adhere to when they are pushed against the wall?" When conflict approaches the scale that men fear then men return to their own gods; and what does the innocent mind and spirit see? The god of each contending nation is the illusion of the other; even the antidote to the other.

Memory begins with the gods. The gods are transformed. The old gods are acted out by the succeeding generations. The gods become a custom, an unconscious folkway. The machines are the exhaustion of old gods. To say, ipso facto, men are gods is an abomination and, finally, worthless.
