Chapter 1

SPACE

It was difficult not to think I was in an experiment of some sort. It was obvious to me that the human being could be unbundled and disaggregated a billion different times. It was possible to see a single neuron fly off and become the seed of a whole new culture. Nothing was left but the sense of eternity. Oh, their intuitions were so close to being right! That did amaze me until I realized it was set up to be a huge puzzle to begin with. We were to stay intact until we had solved the puzzle. This was clear enough. Some had prematurely made the puzzle into a religion but this was not it at all. It was not to be worshipped. It was to be stood up and faced and picked at and unlatched until the thing solved. Not that there was any one solution. And it wasn't that the solution one place had made it so it was solved for all time. Solutions were not passed down. You had to work and suffer even to come close to it.
