Earth had produced a stubborn proliferation in the human animal, this was clear to me in my new situation. So it was clear to me that it would proliferate wherever it could take hold and for a long time I believed that to be my mission. “A spawn for the damn creature I despise!” People had sprouted up like hair on a sick man and rushed forward in ways that were comical and tragic. Smart guys had been trying to figure it out, I would shrug my shoulders and say ‘why not,’ but all in all the explanation was not as fun as the imaginative recreation of the process from the beginning to the point where one stood exactly certain he was living at the edge of experience. “I have what they had, I know what they knew, all of them combined, up and down the line but I stand here with vast stupidity around me.” And then I would hear the laughter. And I would chalk it up to the milieu of specialism and let some other fool worry about it.
