POEMS FOR NOONE

By David Eide

She Sd

"There will be a period of lonliness," the lady said.

"There is a wasteland extending from the city to the ocean
and you must wander its troubled miles, closed to the lights of the city."

"You must wander past the birdless rocks and through the crabs that bear the fossils
that supplicate the restless sea; the smell of ash will be with you many days!"

"You will feel the Earth revolving under your feet and be helpless when you hear the cries
of children coming from the passing ships."

"Why me? Why do I have this fate?"
