REGION OF MEMORY

By David Eide

Memories of youth soon turn
A carnivorous world. Initiation.
Darkness, then light.

Delight brings down its
performing trick
for the old,
diminishing generation,
eager to revenge themselves
on lost youth.

Awkward rides the first step.
Intoxicated youth stumbles between
images of perfection and cynical looks;
puffed up with knowledge
that the world taint is not on them yet.

But soon, they will be painted
in many colors of initiation.
Valley after valley
city after city
fall away to the obsequious sun.

Figures of an amorphous form
offers a map of the world.

They ride through the sonorous songs
of the electrified world;
a peasant in Mongolia shouts
and a whirlwind drives through
the native women of the Amazon.
